Calicut (Kozhikode ) the traditional capital of Northern Kerala under the Samuthiri rule, was the most important city of Malabar region of Kerala renowned as a leading trading centre for spices on the West Coast of India during the medieval period. A bustling city and commercial capital of Malabar, Calicut has an International Airport, University, Medical College and prestigious Indian Institute of Management and National Institute of Technology(NIT).
Calicut – New Developments
The State Government has decided to set up and run a knowledge park near Kozhikode. The knowledge park, to be set up with private participation, would cater to certain knowledge-based core areas such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, information technology, pharmaceuticals and microelectronics. The Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) has identified 100 acres of land near Kozhikode for the proposed knowledge park.
The park would turn out to be an education hub of Malabar in the future, coordinating knowledge dissemination at higher levels.Grasim Industries Ltd.of Aditya Birla Group has expressed interest in setting up a knowledge park in the land at Mavoor, near Kozhikode, where it was operating a pulp-fibre factory till 2001. There are plan to rope in the eminent institution BITS Pilani to fuel rapid development in this field.
The Kerala Government is drawing up a major plan for the development of Beypore port near Kozhikode. The proposal is to develop the port jointly by the State and Union governments and a private sector partner. Government is keen on improving the facilities at the Beypore fishing harbour to international standards. The port will have the infrastructure to enable berthing of any type of vessels. The depth and the breadth of the existing channel at the port will be increased for the purpose. The port is being developed incorporating all the modern facilities keeping in view its growth prospects.
